At least 12 people, including eight children, were killed when heavy monsoon rains caused a residential building in a Mumbai slum to collapse, Indian authorities said Thursday.
Mumbai city authorities confirmed that seven other residents were injured in the incident on Wednesday evening, as rescuers continued to search for several more people who feared they might go missing.
Residents were evacuated from nearby structures considered to be in an unsafe condition.
Among the injured, six were in stable condition, with a 30-year-old woman admitted to hospital in critical condition.
“Three people are still suspected of being trapped and the search operation is underway to find them,” Prabhat Rahangdale of the Mumbai municipal administration told the Indian Express daily.
Collapses of poorly constructed buildings are common during the monsoon, which officially hit India’s financial capital on Wednesday, causing widespread flooding and traffic chaos.
