JERUSALEM – A Arab man with a knife killed four people on Tuesday and seriously injured two others in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba before being shot and killed by armed residents, police said.

Police said the attacker brought his car into a cyclist and stabbed five people across a stretch of downtown. Amateur video footage posted online appeared to show armed spectators shooting and killing the attacker on the spot.

Israeli police chief Kobi Shabtai told reporters at a press briefing on the spot that the incident was “a heinous murder carried out by a terrorist known to the security services” who had previously served a prison sentence. He said the attacker appeared to have acted alone.

Shabtai declined to comment further on the suspect, but Israeli media identified the attacker as a 34-year-old Arab man from the nearby Bedouin town of Hura. Reports said he was jailed for four years after admitting he intended to join Islamic State in Syria in 2015.

The Abu al-Qeian clan, from which the attacker came, issued a statement condemning the attack, describing it as a terrorist operation. “This is an individual act representing only the perpetrator,” the family said, sending condolences to the families of the victims.

Omer Barlev, the minister responsible for police, wrote on Twitter that the attack was committed “by a cursed terrorist that it would have been better if he had not been released from prison in 2019.”

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett issued a statement of condolence to the families of the victims, saying “we will work hard against those who commit terrorism. We will also persecute and reach out to those who help them.”

Palestinians have been accused of dozens of stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks targeting Israeli civilians and security personnel in recent years.

Most of the alleged attacks were carried out by persons with no known connections to armed groups. However, it is rare that such attacks are committed by Palestinian citizens in Israel.

In the Gaza Strip, some Palestinians were seen handing out sweets to express joy after the attack. Hamas militant group spokesman Hazem Qassem praised the attack as “a response to the policy of ethnic deportation” against the Arab citizens of Israel.
