Police spokesman Brigadier General Sabata Mokgwabone said Chauke had been arrested in connection with two January burglaries and then released on bail.

Mokgwabone said:

According to the information available at this stage, the reports suggest that Chauke was attacked and set on fire by hitherto unidentified members of the community after being charged with theft.

He was declared dead on the spot.

Mokgwabone said residents also targeted Chauke’s 56-year-old mother and 33-year-old friend. He said the two of them were burned after being accused of hiding Chauke. They were seriously injured, ”Mokgwabone said.

They were taken to the local hospital.

“The house in which they live was partially burned while a police car was damaged during the incident. As a result, police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, arson and malicious damage to property,” Mokgwabone said.

Northwest Police Chief Sello Kwena is urging a thorough investigation “to expose those who committed these illegal and brutal mafia loves.”
