A woman was arrested after discovering that her baby was abandoned at a train station in Cape Town

A 21-year-old woman was arrested in connection with a 15-month-old girl who was found abandoned at Bellville Station over the weekend.

A woman named in News24 was arrested by police in Langa on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi confirmed that the woman had been tracked and arrested by investigators.

“When she is prosecuted, she would be expected to appear in the Magistrates’ Court of Bellville for abandoning her child against bail,” he said.

According to police, the baby girl is currently in a safe place.

She was discovered by station guards on Sunday afternoon and taken to Belleville police. Belleville police have filed a proceeding to abandon the child.

Swartbooi said police had tracked and arrested the suspect, informed by residents.
