The African Basketball League (BAL) today announced a series of youth development, community service and business events that will take place during the 2022 BAL Playoffs and Finals, starting today at Kigali Arena in Rwanda and culminating in the second BAL Final on Saturday, 28 May. 12:00 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CAT.
Agence Francaise de Development (AFD), New Fortress Energy (NFE), RwandAir and Visit Rwanda will collaborate with BAL to support events and activations throughout the week. BAL’s list of world-class partners includes Foundational Partners NFE, Rwanda Development Board (RDB), NIKE, Jordan Brand and Wilson; and Air Senegal’s official partners, Attorney General’s Alliance (AGA) – Africa, Destination Senegal, Envol City and Hennessy.
The single-elimination BAL Playoffs will feature the top eight teams from the Saharan League group stage and the Nile Conference being held in Dakar, Senegal (5-15 March) and Cairo, Egypt (9-19 April), respectively. Tickets for the BAL Playoffs and Finals are now on sale in several categories, including group tickets, premium tickets, and standard tickets. Below are the highlights of this week’s events and activations:
Agency Francaise de Development (AFD)
BAL will collaborate with AFD to promote “Alley-Oop Africa,” an original document and awareness campaign for African youth that highlights how sport and athletes can drive positive behavior change in support of sustainable development, health and gender equality. Twenty boys and girls from seven African countries took part in the recording of the documentary in March 2022, some of whom will participate in youth development and basketball activities during the Playoffs and the BAL Finals. The documentary will air later this year with additional details and distribution plans to be announced at a later date.
Returning as Official Airline Partner of the 2022 BAL Playoffs and Finals, RwandAir facilitates travel to and from Kigali for BAL teams, staff and guests.
BAL Environmental Service Day
The first BAL Environmental Service Day project took place in Umusambi Village in Kigali from 19-20 May. Seven BAL teams attended the event, where they explored Umusambi Village and planted tree seedlings as part of the Tiga Tree initiative in partnership with NFE. For every three-pointer made during the BAL season, BAL and NFE will donate three trees to be planted in the home country of the BAL team with the most three-pointers throughout the season.
The third BAL4Her day, in partnership with Visit Rwanda, will take place tomorrow and bring together 50 young women from six local organizations to take part in workshop sessions and network with female leaders from the sports industry focused on career development in sports. The workshop will include panel discussions with NBA Vice President and Nigerian Head of State Gbemisola Abudu and group discussions with 13 women across the sports industry. Following the workshop, participants will take part in networking sessions with BAL staff before receiving a VIP game day experience at the Zamalek – SLAC game.
BAL Coach Clinic
On Sunday, May 22 and Monday, May 23, Indiana Pacers assistant coach Lloyd Pierce and Detroit Pistons assistant coach Bill Bayno will lead the BAL Coach Clinic for more than 70 local community basketball coaches. The clinic will offer tools and strategies to help coaches improve their players’ basketball development curricula. BAL Innovation Summit
The inaugural BAL Innovation Summit in conjunction with Africa Day on Wednesday, 25 May will bring together African leaders from business, entertainment, sports, social entrepreneurship and beyond to discuss the continent’s enormous growth opportunities. The event, which will be held at the Kigali Convention Centre, will highlight Africa’s creative identity through the lens of art, culture, heritage, business and innovation, and mobilize individuals who have the power to unlock opportunities and build towards stronger ones. and a more connected Africa in the future.
BAL Elevate Storefront
The inaugural BAL Elevate showcase will feature the top prospects from the African NBA Academy taking on the Rwanda National Under-23 Team at Kigali Arena on Friday, 27 May at 9:30 p.m. CAT. The game, which will feature the next generation of African players, will be shown live in Africa on ESPN Africa, Canal+ and Visionary TV, in the US on ESPN+, and worldwide on NBA TV International. The quarter-finals will continue tomorrow with Monastir USA of Tunisia (4-1) facing Cape Town Tigers of South Africa (2-3) at 8:30 ET / 14:30 CAT, followed by defending champion BAL Zamalek of Egypt (5-0 ) against SLAC Guinea (2-3) at noon ET/6pm CAT.
