He faces five counts including terrorism, in connection with the fire which ravaged Parliament on 2 January. Mafe’s legal team, including lawyer Dali Mpofu, has arrived in court before a special bail application.

Mafe’s lawyer, Dali Mpofu, arrived in court accompanied by his legal team amid a heavy media presence. Police cordoned off the area in front of the court in anticipation of a demonstration by the accused supporters.

AZAPO members demand immediate release of Mafe

Members of the Azanian People’s Organization (AZAPO) protesting outside the Cape Town High Court in support of Mafe have called for his immediate release.

Azapo spokesman Gaontebale Nodoba spoke to the media outside the court. He says Mafe is being used as a scapegoat to cover up government failures.

“You have seen citizens of South Africa, they are clinging to straws. Suddenly, in a democratic South Africa, the first person to be charged with acts related to terrorism is a poor black homeless man. What a shame for this so-called quasi-democracy. How is it that coming from apartheid in 1994, we enter a so-called democracy and the first person to be accused of acts related to terrorism is a poor black man.
