A film about a dead British singer Amy Winehouse is in production, with “Fifty Shades of Gray” director Sam Taylor-Johnson at the helm of a biography, the production and distribution company Studiocanal has said.
The film is called “Back to Black” and will look at the life and music of six-time Grammy winner, who died of alcohol poisoning at his home in north London on July 23, 2011.
Winehouse, who struggled with drinking and drug problems for much of his career, was 27 years old.
“Studiocanal is preparing to do Back to Black. The project is being developed with Sam Taylor-Johnson in charge of directing the film about the life and music of Amy Winehouse, “said Studiocanal, adding that a screenplay had been written for the film.
“Back to Black is done with the full support of the Amy Winehouse property.
British filmmaker Taylor-Johnson is known for directing the first “Fifty Shades of Gray”, adaptation of the most popular trilogy, drama “A Million Little Pieces” as well as episodes for the TV series “Gypsy” and “Solos”.
Considered one of the most talented singers of her generation with hits such as “Rehab” and “Back to Black”, Winehouse’s untimely death shook the music world.
Several documentaries have been made about her, told by her mother and shown on the British BBC in 2021 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the singer’s death.
The 2015 documentary “AMY” about Winehouse won director Asif Kapadia an Oscar, although at the time the singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, called it misleading and said that the family had withdrawn from the film.
The industry publication Deadline said that the search for the actor who plays Winehouse in the film would begin in the coming weeks.
