JOHANNESBURG – Members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) have raised concerns about the challenges posed by migration in the country, with most praising the efforts of Home Secretary Aaron Motsoaledi in the management of undocumented migrants.

Eyewitness News understands that NEC members have also voiced their support for the minister as the NGO, the Helen Suzman Foundation, prepares for a legal battle against him over the decision not to renew the permits of hundreds of thousands of Zimbabwean nationals once they expire.

Affected permit holders will have to reapply for residency before the end of the year or risk deportation.

The ordinary meeting, which also treated with Eskomthe Women’s League, as well as the North West and Free State Provincial Conferences, concluded on Monday.

South Africa’s growing turmoil with undocumented African migrants has long been a thorny issue, which some ANC members describe as an albatross around the party’s neck that must be resolved before national elections in 2024.

Eyewitness News understands that a report to this effect has been submitted to the NEC.

It is understood that members during the lively session suggested the tightening of its policies on this issue, as some raised concerns about the impact of undocumented migrants on the growing crime in the country.

Former President Thabo Mbeki, who was reportedly present, reportedly warned members about their approach to the issue.

The leader, who is revered across the continent, reportedly called on the organization to be sensitive when dealing with the issue, warning of unintended consequences.

This growing tension around undocumented migrants has seen parties that promote tighter border controls and trade regulations gain popularity.
