The ANC says that spokesperson for the ANC’s national youth work team, Sizophila Mkhize, will be punished for her comments about Indians in KwaZulu-Natal, with the party calling the comments unacceptable.

ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said the party noted a video recording in which Mkhize, a member of the ANC’s national youth work team, made derogatory and racist remarks to against people of Indian origin in KwaZulu Natal.

“Not only are his words unacceptable, but they also discredit our movement and the necessary disciplinary proceedings will be initiated.

“The ANC expects members of the NYTT which is charged with rebuilding the ANCYL to adhere to the values, principles and non-racial character of the movement both in their actions and in their articulations,” Mabe said.

He said the situation in KwaZulu-Natal called for decisive and responsible leadership and that they all had a responsibility to heal the deep wounds “of our horrible past”.

“We urge our members to resist attempts to divide them based on ethnicity, race and national origin.

“We must refuse to see ourselves as enemies.

“We must oppose all attempts to provoke racial hostilities and to divide Indians and Africans.

“The ANC urges law enforcement to ensure that the murders that took place in Phoenix are investigated and prosecuted as a matter of urgency,” Mabe said.

He went on to say that the ANC appreciates the cooperation displayed by religious and civic groups in exposing those involved in the horrific acts witnessed in Phoenix and other parts of the country.

Mabe said rebuilding the country and its economy will require everyone to work together because all South Africans have a duty to fight racism wherever it can show its ugly head.

“In the long run, improving the material conditions of all South African people will lead to a truly equal, united and non-racial nation.

“The ANC calls on all its structures to continue to mobilize all progressive forces to oppose all forms of racism and build unity among the people,” Mabe said.
