Another Oscar nomination relieves Italian director Sorrentino’s insecurity – SABC News

For Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, he helped alleviate his insecurity as a filmmaker when he received another Oscar nomination in his career this year.

“It makes me really happy and proud,” said Sorrentino, whose film “The Hand of God” was nominated for Best International Episode at this month’s Academy Awards, in an interview. “If the first time could have been traced to a coincidence, the latter proves that one has done a good job over the years.

“Hand of God” will compete with the Danish documentary “Flee” and the Japanese film “Drive My Car”, which is considered to be the leader in a category where it was nominated for Best Picture.

Not going in as a favorite on the night of March 27, when the gold statues will be awarded in Los Angeles, has eased the tension at Sorrentino, who won an Oscar in 2014 with the film “The Great Beauty”.

This year, the Neapolitan director said he would enjoy the show.

In “The Hand of God”, an age-old film set in Naples in the 1980s, Sorrentino mixed laughter and loss to recount the tragedy that befell his family when he was a teenager.

The filmmaker’s parents were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning the night the 17 – year – old man went to the stadium to watch one of his idols, the late Argentine footballer Diego Maradona, play for his home in Naples.

The title of the film refers to Maradona’s description of his famous goal against England at the 1986 World Cup.

Netflix, where “The Hand of God” is streaming around the world after a limited movie release in December, was “the perfect tool” for a film that covers a wide range of themes such as love and loss, Sorrentino said.

“Most of us have experienced pain or loss that has changed the way we perceive things in life… and this, I think, is universal.
