  • Men live in Seychelles and the majority of the population is vaccinated, but infections are also on the rise.
  • Seychelles was in a hurry to immunize the population so that tourists could resume.

A man who received two versions of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine died of illness in Seychelles on Thursday.

A 54-year-old man died of Covid-19 for the first time in a fully vaccinated country, island nation public health commissioner Jude Gedeon said at a news conference. He didn’t say how many years ago he did, and whether the case was being investigated by AstraZeneca.

With a population of 98,000, the country has vaccinated its population at a higher rate than any other country, but as infections are rampant and Covid-19 variants become more prevalent, vaccines There are questions about its effectiveness. So far, 68% of the population has been vaccinated twice.

Seychelles uses Sinopharm and Covishield, which are shot versions of AstraZeneca manufactured in India, for almost all vaccinations. The government states that Seychelles has primarily assigned Covishields to people over the age of 60, but in some cases it may be distributed to younger people.

Surrounded by palm trees, the Indian Ocean archipelago was competing to immunize its population so that it could be reopened by tourists, the lifeline of its economy. The government said last month that unvaccinated citizens were six times more likely to be infected with Covid-19 than those who were vaccinated.

Studies have shown that the AstraZeneca vaccine is nearly 100% protective against mortality from most Covid-19 variants, but mild and moderate from the first beta variant identified in South Africa. The efficacy against the disease was only 22%. The mutation was found in Seychelles.

Limits considered

Fully vaccinated people have died elsewhere. On June 3, the New York Times reported that a fully vaccinated woman died of Covid-19 in Covid-19 more than a month after receiving her second modeler shot in Napa County, USA.

The number of cases in Seychelles has declined since its first peak in early May, but remains high today.

“Unfortunately, the downtrend seen since mid-May seems to have stabilized and will not go down any further,” said Gedeon. “The spread of infection in the community continues,” he added, adding that restrictions on assembly and movement could be tightened.

Gedeon urged those who had not yet received the second dose to do so after 1,538 people missed the second Covishield and 2,076 Sinopharm vaccine appointments.

As of June 9, Seychelles had 1,293 active Covid-19 cases.

The government is considering giving people booster shots and is in talks to get Pfizer doses for teens. We have also started using the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.
