At least 42 died in India after drinking toxic alcohol

At least 42 people have died and nearly 100 others have been hospitalized in western India after drinking toxic alcohol, police said Thursday, as authorities ordered a crackdown on bootleggers.

Dozens of people fell ill earlier this week after drinking methanol – a toxic form of alcohol sometimes used as antifreeze – sold in several villages in Gujarat state.

Senior police official Ashok Yadav told AFP that 31 people had since died in Botad district.

Another 11 people died in nearby Ahmedabad district, V Chandrasekar, another senior police official, told AFP.

External Affairs Minister Harsh Sanghavi said in a statement:

Investigations have revealed that the victims had consumed industrial grade methanol which caused the deaths.

Sanghavi said 97 people had been admitted to hospital for treatment, two of whom were in critical condition.

Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, is one of several states in India where the consumption and sale of liquor is illegal.

Authorities have cracked down on illegal liquor shops across Gujarat and arrested several people, state police chief Ashish Bhatia said on Wednesday.

Of the estimated five billion liters of alcohol drunk each year in the country, about 40 percent is illegally produced, according to the International Spirits and Wine Association of India.

The liquid is often added with methanol to increase its strength. If ingested, methanol can cause blindness, liver damage and death.

Last year, 98 people died in the northern state of Punjab after drinking booze.

And in 2019, more than 150 people died in a similar incident in the northeastern state of Assam, most of them tea plantation workers.
