Austerity by force, terrorism in Africa dominates AU summit in Malabo – SABC News

President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined the 16th African Union Conference in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Today the focus of the summit is on the challenge of removing government from power and threat on the continent.
African Union (AU) President Moussa Faki Mahamat has said terrorism on the continent should be eradicated.
“Africa is the last continent in the world to have a high level of terrorism and unconstitutional change. We need to take up this challenge and overcome it on a continental level,” Mahamat said.
It is also the first opportunity for African leaders since 2014 to address security and collective bargaining against terrorism and violence currently affecting all five regions of the African Union. pic.twitter.com/aq7Sk94wHO

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov, says he has put the continent’s stability in jeopardy.
“Terrorism remains a major global threat affecting the lives of millions. This has been particularly the case in five regions of Africa where terrorist activity has increased dramatically. About half of these deaths were recorded in global terrorism last year on the continent. “
