- Protea’s limited-over captain Temba Bavuma said he was disappointed with Sisanda Magala’s fitness woes.
- The burly Lions all-rounder was left out of the men’s national team for fitness reasons.
- Bavuma said fitness matters are discussed thoroughly with players to avoid problems later in the season.
Protea’s limited-over skipper Temba Bavuma couldn’t hide his disappointment that provincial teammate Sisanda Magala’s unfitness prevented him from being part of the national team.
Magala has been in excellent form for the Lions in the ongoing One-Day Cup, but a failed fitness test prevented him from being part of the men’s national team for Bangladesh’s ODI series, which begins Friday at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Bavuma said he’s heard good things about Magala trying to get back to more-than-decent levels of fitness, but his exclusion from this current engagement must rest squarely on his shoulders.
“I really don’t think there’s much to discuss about that,” Bavuma said.
“The issue of fitness testing is something that all cricketers in our system are made aware of and everyone knows what they need to do to qualify from a fitness perspective.
“At Magala he knows the only thing he can do is point the finger at himself and as captain I am disappointed not to have him available.
“I think he can accept that it’s his own doing, although I’m told he’s done a lot more good to improve his fitness.
“At this point he is not at the appropriate level of fitness.”
Bavuma said they have long understood that fitness issues are the individual responsibility of players and they must do what is expected of them.
Bavuma said fitness matters are discussed extensively between players and management to ensure standards are maintained before and during the season.
“I’m not an expert on that. Mine is playing cricket,” said Bavuma.
“If a fitness trainer tells me I have to run at a certain level and all of those things are communicated to us in good time.
“It’s nothing new or sprung. It’s something that affects all players equally.”
