Beterbiev aims for unification fight against Dmitry Bivol – SABC News

World light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev has his undisputed status in his sights after stopping American Joe Smith Jr. in two rounds to add the WBO title to his WBC and IBF belts.

The Montreal-based Russian scored three knockdowns with a series of brutal shots, leaving Smith looking badly injured before referee Harvey Dock waved the fight off with just over 40 seconds remaining in the second round. Beterbiev, 37, maintained his unbeaten record with the 18th win of his career, all of which ended in the distance.

His win on Saturday puts him closer to a unification match with WBA holder Dmitry Bivol, who defended his title in May with a unanimous win over Canelo Alvarez.

“Joe is a bit open and it was easy to get to him. Two fighters who both have good shots and I was lucky to finish first,” said Beterbiev. “I have two unification fights, I prefer unification. I prefer to be unchallenged.”
