US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he would talk to other leaders from the group of seven advanced economies this week about potential further sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine.
“We are always open to further sanctions,” Biden told reporters when asked about US plans after the EU on Wednesday proposed its toughest sanctions to date, including a step-by-step oil embargo.
I will be talking to the members of the G7 this week about what we will do or not do.
Russia has intensified its offensive in eastern Ukraine, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said Wednesday, nearly 10 weeks into a war that has killed thousands of people, uprooted millions with cluttered and flattened Ukrainian cities.
Russia also stepped up attacks on targets in western Ukraine, saying it was disrupting Western arms supplies, and the close Russian ally Belarus announced extensive military exercises.
New measures announced by the EU include sanctions against Russia’s supreme bank and a ban on Russian TV stations from European radio waves, as well as the embargo on crude oil in six months.
