U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, the U.S. Department of State said, adding that it has mild symptoms.
The top U.S. ambassador, who has been vaccinated and promoted, has not seen President Joe Biden himself for several days, so Biden is not considered a close ally, the department said in a statement.
“The secretary should be at home and have a work schedule. He hopes to return to the Department and resume his duties and travels as soon as possible, ”the statement said.
He added that Blinken tested negative on Tuesday earlier on Wednesday before testing positively.
Blinken attended the White House Correspondents’ (WHCD) party in Washington, DC over the weekend, attended by thousands of people including celebrities in the media and politics.
In a nutshell, department spokeswoman Ned Price said the company was trying to reach out to people with whom Blinken had been in contact in the past.
Blinken met with Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde on Wednesday with her Mexican counterpart Marcelo Ebrard on Tuesday.
Ebrard said in a tweet that he had taken the PCR test when he met Blinken.
Price, who regularly sees Blinken, said he tested the negative about an hour before the issue.
Blinken’s expected remarks were echoed in China’s official policy on Thursday.
