Flavio Hlabangwane is charged with murder
- The Soweto man who allegedly dissected the body of his lover was declared fit.
- Flavio Hlabangwane reportedly stuffed the remains of his lover into his freezer.
- After the report of the Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital was submitted to the court, he was ordered to stand trial again.
A Soweto man accused of murdering his lover and cutting up a corpse has been declared fit for trial.
Judge David Mhango ordered Flavio Hlabangwane to be brought to justice after a report from Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital was filed with the Protea Magistrate’s Court. The report stated that he would be able to understand and follow court proceedings.
Hlabangwane was taken to hospital after twice trying to end his life.
The case was urgently brought before the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Friday after the hospital quickly carried out a psychiatric examination of Hlabangwane.
“They have come to the conclusion that you are fit to stand trial. They have come to the conclusion that you were able to assess the lawfulness of your actions when you committed the alleged act.
“The case will be adjourned due to instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and further investigation,” Mhango said.
Phindi Mjonondwane, a spokesman for the National Prosecutor’s Office, welcomed the hospital’s prompt assessment.
Mjonondwane said they are awaiting a decision from the DPP on whether the trial will be heard in the Supreme Court or the Regional Court.
We hope the DPP will make the decision at our next date. Investigations are ongoing.
Hlabangwane was arrested in his home in Soweto in November 2021 after body parts were found in his freezer.
His girlfriend found the remains of a woman in her rented room and notified police.
It was reported that the body parts were body parts of Tshepang Pitse. However, police have not yet confirmed who the deceased was.
Pitse was a cousin of Hlabangwane and was said to be in love.
Hlabangwane was expected to return to court on April 20th.
