Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was taken to hospital on Monday for tests after he felt an abdominal “discomfort”, said his communications minister Fabio Faria.
“He is fine,” Faria told Reuters, confirming earlier local media reports that the president was taken to the army hospital in Brasilia for tests.
Faria said the president did not feel well, with abdominal discomfort, and went to the hospital to be tested because he has a history of intestinal obstructions.
He will spend the night in the hospital under observation.
Bolsonaro was admitted to hospital in January for an intestinal obstruction that was removed and he did not need surgery. The blockade was his latest complication of a stab in the stomach at a campaign stop in 2018.
Since then, he has undergone six surgeries due to the sting and to correct a hernia in the injured area. In July last year, after 11 days of hiccups, he was hospitalized with severe abdominal pain that was treated without surgery.
Bolsonaro, who began campaigning for re-election in October, was scheduled to attend a Republican caucus but did not appear, local media reported.
The party’s president, Marcos Pereira, said at the event that the president went to the hospital without feeling well, a Pereira aide said.
