Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Thursday that he knows how to “solve” the war between Russia and Ukraine, and that he will share his proposals with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, with whom he plans to speak by phone next week.
“I tell him my opinion, what I think. The solution to this. I know how to solve it. But I won’t tell anyone,” Bolsonaro told reporters during a visit to the northeastern state of Maranhao.
“The solution would be the way Argentina’s war with the UK ended in 1982,” he said, without elaborating.
Argentina and Great Britain had a brief conflict in 1982 over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, in the South Atlantic. It began in April 1982, when Argentine troops landed on British-controlled islands and Britain sent a naval task force to retake them. The ill-equipped Argentine troops stood little chance, and Argentina surrendered two months later.
Bolsonaro will have a phone call with Zelenskiy on July 18. He said it was the Ukrainian leader who first reached out and immediately agreed to the call.
In February, a few days before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Brazilian president visited his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow. Bolsonaro has so far taken a neutral stance on the conflict, as Brazil wants to continue doing business with Russia.
Earlier this week, its foreign minister said Brazil wanted to buy as much diesel as it could from Russia, which is also a major fertilizer supplier to the South American agricultural powerhouse.
“This war caused a great deal of confusion. Less for Brazil, much more for Europe,” said Bolsonaro.
