BREAKING: AmaZulu splits with Benni McCarthy

In the DStv Premiership, Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu dwindle to ninth place with just five wins from 23 games.

Although the team have impressed at times in the Caf Champions League, PSL performances have been poles apart from the 2020-21 season when AmaZulu finished a notable second place. The previous season, Usuthu had landed in the relegation zone, but Zungu and McCarthy joined forces to reverse the team’s fate.

Not everything has gone according to plan this season, however, with AmaZulu actually without a win in 2022, and president Sandile Zungu recently said he was “not happy” with how the team underperformed in the DSTV Premiership.

Well acc iDiski timesa source has confirmed that the “Club have decided to part ways with McCarthy”. When contacted by iDiski timesMcCarthy stated that he was called to a meeting with the club’s leadership.

“I think our performance this season, especially in the local campaign, has been way below what is expected from AmaZulu. We’re not entirely happy about that,” Zungu said recently TimesLIVE.

“But our season in the Caf Champions League was very impressive until recently when we lost two games (in a row against ES Setif from Algeria and Raja Casablanca from Morocco).

“But we didn’t play minnows, we played former champions who know what they’re doing. So we’re quite happy with our performance as it was our first entry into the Caf Champions League. We will live to fight another day.

“We have seven games to get back in the top four because I really think AmaZulu is a top team (four). That’s what I want, and if I don’t get that, then there will be accountability,” Zungu said.

Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu is the next PSL player when they take on Baroka on April 6th

Meanwhile, SuperSport CEO Stanley Matthews offered McCarthy support earlier this week, saying he could reach similar heights Pitso Mosimane has reached.

“Perhaps you could look at Benni now, with his track record of playing and the access to personalities and intellectual capital he has on a direct basis, whether it’s a Jose Mourinho, he’s put himself in a bracket where he’s a particular one coach.” Matthew called.

“Without the international presence, taste and modern trends, without spending time with the best practitioners of the game that are in Europe right now, if you don’t do that, you can’t reach the level that Pitso is.”
