Britain set to approve Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea – Source – SABC News

Britain is set to approve the sale of Premier League football Chelsea to a consortium led by Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters, after owner Roman Abramovich gave guarantees about the deal.

The Russian Abramovich put the club up for sale in early March after the invasion of his country in Ukraine.

The British government demanded guarantees that Abramovich, who was sanctioned after the invasion – which Moscow calls a special operation – would not profit from the sale.

The London club announced earlier this month the £ 4.25 billion deal ($ 5.2 billion) with Boehly’s consortium, backed by Clearlake Capital, for the reigning European champions, subject to receiving the required approval.

The British government’s approval of the sale was finalized Monday night, the source said, although the deal also necessitated EU approval, as Abramovich has a Portuguese passport.

The Financial Times and the BBC were the first to report the current approval of the sale by the government.
