The 2022 Design Thinking with Children Fellowship program, an initiative of Play Africa, has opened applications for its second class.
Based in Constitution Hill, Play Africa is considered South Africa’s “pioneering” children’s museum and education creation space.
The Play Africa Fellowship Program welcomes applicants from a wide range of professions such as architecture, urban planning, design thinking, education, child advocacy and community development. The program is also open to parents and guardians.
The scholarship program is designed to empower children to think creatively while developing innovative solutions to real-world challenges. This unprecedented learning experience builds children’s confidence as problem solvers, helping to nurture the next generation of African creators, innovators and inventors. By empowering children to prototype new solutions for safer and more playful cities, we are pioneering inclusive and creative education in Africa.
“Children are agents of change who have a right to the city and deserve communities that respond to their needs while reflecting their ideas and thoughts,” says Zviko Kanyoka, Program Manager at Play Africa. “So we’re looking for candidates who are passionate about empowering children so they can have their voices and ideas heard to transform their communities and cities.”
As part of the program, Play Africa has developed an easy-to-use toolkit to build the capacity of placemakers, educators and others to lead a participatory creative education workshop that empowers children to solve real-world challenges. that can positively influence the development of more child-friendly, safe and playful urban environments, with a focus on African cities.
Through the Fellowship training, Play Africa will provide participants with the practical skills and toolkit resource to implement design thinking workshops with children aged 7-12 and beyond. Upon completion of the training, fellows will be able to facilitate Design Thinking with Children’s Play Africa workshop in their own community and will receive a certificate of successful completion.
The Design Thinking with Children program is made possible through the support of the BIC Corporate Foundation which focuses on supporting partners and programs that create stronger, more inclusive and creative communities while inspiring and equipping our children and young adults to mark our world.
