A woman who could not be named to protect her child’s identity was sentenced to five years in prison for child abuse and five years for child abuse this week after being convicted in May.

On February 20, 2019, a woman and her longtime friend Ursula Pace were indicted after the girl was rescued by resident Deborah van Rensburg.

“The child had bites, bruises, abrasions and burns on his body. He was called to the police and consulted by a doctor,” said Eric Ntabazaril, a spokesman for the Western Cape State Prosecutor’s Office.

Ntabazalila said the two women had asked the court to impose a fine as a judgment. The country opposed and demanded that the court be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

“They were initially charged with attempted murder, assaults intended to cause serious physical harm and rape, but were acquitted because there was no direct evidence linking them,” he added.

In addition to imprisonment, the mother was banned from working with her child and was declared inappropriate to own a gun.

Pace was convicted of negligence in his child and sentenced to five years in prison. She was also declared unfit to work with her children.

According to De Louw, the child was in a care facility and was fine.

“She has completely healed from her physical injury, but there are still some things that need to be resolved. Victims will soon be part of the adoption process,” she said.
