PIETERMARITZBURG — Delays have once again derailed the start of the case, of the alleged instigator of July’s arson attack. Mdumiseni Zuma is facing charges related to the fire at the Brookside shopping center in Pietermaritzburg.

The defendant’s attorney said he was not ready because Zuma appeared briefly in Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Thursday. His attorney told the court they needed more time to review and finalize Zuma’s specific instructions.

During Zuma’s appearance, his lawyer told the court that they could not proceed with the trial at this time. “While the state was prepared to proceed, to the effect that the witnesses were warned to be in court, the case was adjourned at the request of the defense,” said the NPA spokeswoman, Natasha Ramkissoon-Kara.

Zuma faces charges of incitement to commit public violence and incitement to commit arson related to the mall fire.

He remained in custody following an unsuccessful bail application on appeal. The case has been adjourned to September 1 and 2, 2022.
