Caster Semenya offered to show officials her body to prove she was a woman – SABC News

Two-time Olympic champion in the 800 meters Caster Semenya offered to show her body to the sports authorities when she was 18 to prove she was female, the South African mediocre runner said in an interview with Real Sports on HBO which will be shown on Tuesday.

Semenyanow 31, came to prominence in 2009 when she won the world title in the women’s 800 meters by an incredible margin a few hours after the world board of the sport said she would undergo a gender test.

“They thought I had an ad, probably,” Semenya said in an HBO Real Sports interview that will be shown at 22:00 ET (0200 GMT). “I told them, ‘This is okay. I’m a woman, I do not care. If you want to see that I’m a woman, I’ll show you my vagina. Okay?'”

Sex tests on Semenya reportedly showed that the runner did not have a uterus or ovaries but that she had an inner testicle, the male genitals producing testosterone and her levels of the hormone were three times higher than in a “normal” woman.

Semenya has a condition called hyperandrogenism, which is characterized by higher than normal levels of testosterone, a hormone that increases muscle mass and strength and the body’s ability to use oxygen.

She took medication after the first ruling by World Athletics in 2011 – then the International Athletics Federation – that all women athletes with above-the-drug drugs must medically lower their testosterone levels.

“It made me sick, I gained weight, anxiety attacks, I do not know if I was ever going to have a heart attack,” Semenya told HBO Real Sports. “It’s like stabbing yourself every day. But I had no choice.

“I’m 18, I want to run, I want to get to the Olympics, that’s the only option for me.

World Athletics lawyer Jonathan Taylor, speaking at the HBO Real Sports interview, disagreed with medical committees, including the World Medical Association, which condemned the sport’s rule for requiring women of different ages (DSDs) to take drugs to compete.

“You say that medically it is not healthy for me, then my question to you is, ‘Why do the world’s leading experts say that is what we would prescribe?'” Taylor said.

Semenya retorted: “Jonathan has to cut his tongue and throw it away. If he wants to understand how this thing has tortured me, he has to go and take these drugs. He will understand. “

In 2020, Semenya lost her appeal to the Swiss Federal Court of Appeal over the 2019 arbitral tribunal’s ruling that women athletes with high natural testosterone levels must take medication to reduce it.

She had appealed to the court after CAS, the sport’s highest court, ruled that World Athletics’ rules were necessary for athletes with DSD running at a distance of 400 meters per mile to ensure fair competition.
