No wonder our politicians need bodyguards and car convoys to protect them – at least if Police Minister Bheki Cele holds a reception in Soweto on Wednesday.
The heat-wielding chief colonel felt public anger in his presence, following the killing of South African Kgomotso Diale earlier this week during a protest staged by Operation Dudula in Soweto.
The organization was opposed to the theft of electricity cables and illegal links – allegedly involving foreigners – during a shooting.

The public is angry – and this made it clear to Cele – that there is almost no policing in their area and that cable thefts occur almost daily, with cables being ripped out as soon as they are replaced.
The lie of growing crime – and the alleged involvement of foreigners (a rooted view, inspired by the activism of populist politicians and groups such as Operation Dudula) – it is a fuse for an explosion of more xenophobic and counter – violent violence that is already burning.
Cele needs to do more than just stand for the cameras, protected by their security data. It needs to order real change and deal with the criminals, whatever their origins.
