Celebrities, athletes come out to see Verstappen win the first Miami GP – SABC News

The Formula 1 race in Miami on Sunday was under scrutiny as a heavyweight battle between Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Verstappen took the victory, second in a row and third of the year for the 2021 F1 driver champion. His previous victories had come in Saudi Arabia and Italy.

The race attracted some big names in both the sports and entertainment world.

Among them was musician DJ Khaled, “The Best City in the World, Miami, Formula 1, Let’s Go!”

Paolo Banchero, Duke University basketball player, “I mean, these cars go so fast that you can not even get a good video when they pass, but I love it here, it’s a drug.

Rapper Tinie Tempah loves the atmosphere of the world’s largest racing show.

“Yes, I mean this is the first Formula 1 in Miami, so I’m definitely here for it, I was in the qualifiers yesterday, I loved the whole atmosphere.

Advance Leclerc

Leclerc, who led the championship with 27 points at the start of Sunday, had won the opening race in Bahrain and the third race in Australia. He finished second on Sunday, 3.7 seconds behind Verstappen.

Carlos Sainz was third on his Ferrari and Sergio Perez was fourth on Red Bull.

George Russell was fifth in the Mercedes. He was followed by teammate and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen had started the race alongside Perez’s team-mates in the second row, behind the Ferrari poles of Leclerc and Sainz.

But the Dutch Red Bull driver passed Sainz right after the start. He then chased Leclerc, caught up with him on lap 8 and passed the Monaco driver in the first turn on lap 9.

Verstappen worked his way to a 4.6-second lead over Leclerc when the Ferrari driver broke on lap 25. The stop was slow. Verstappen shot a circle later and responded with a quick stop. By the time the stations were completed, Verstappen’s lead had risen to just over 7 seconds.

In lap 41 of 57, AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris contacted him to bring out a safety car. The collapse caused several teams to compete in the hole and move to different tire connections.

Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz and Perez were outside but suddenly placed firmly in front of the field in that order when the safety car stopped on lap 47 of 57.

Leclerc kept the pressure on Verstappen for the next seven laps until Verstappen withdrew in the last three laps.

The race was held on a custom-built, 19-turn, 3.36-mile highway around the Hard Rock Stadium where the Miami Dolphins, NFL, play. The ring did not get much love from the drivers before the race because the surface turned out to be very slippery on the parts that were not rubberized, which made it possible to race with one dog. The race turned out to be better than had been predicted.

The two Aston Martin cars Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel started the race from the pitfalls. It turned out that their fuel was too cold and they chose to leave the pits to avoid a penalty. They were in 10th and 13th place and started last and penultimate.

The only team based in the United States, Haas F1 Racing, had such a day. Mick Schumacher seemed on the verge of accumulating his first points but when he finished ninth he made contact with Vettel and dropped to 15th place. Kevin Magnussen finished 16th for Haas.
