Name is USA Today As one of Judite Little’s latest novels, “Five Books You Can’t Miss” Chanel SistersIs an intimate quest for the mysterious and fascinating life of these famous women who were the heart behind the world-famous French luxury fashion house.
“Chanel Sisters”: The Best Escapism
This historical novel invites readers to the fascinating history of Paris and tells the true story behind the famous Chanel fashion house.
The story is told from the perspective of the lesser-known Antoinette of the Chanel sisters. By doing this, Little provides rare access to the lives, struggles, and courage of these fascinating and powerful women.
Chanel Sisters Is the best escapist and captivates you with its heartwarming colorful characters and lyrical writing that takes you behind the scenes of Chanel’s early days.
Antoinette and his sister Gabriel “Coco” Chanel, abandoned in the orphanage of the monastery, were raised for a simple life. But Chanel girls dream of a glittering and more attractive future.
The sisters decide to prove themselves and begin playing in bohemian cafes and stylish music halls. Soon the bright lights of Paris rushed in, and a small hat shop on Rue Cambon changed their lives forever.
After the outbreak of World War II, their entire world is upside down. Gabriel and Antoinette have to navigate great love, make catastrophic losses, and fight harder than ever to mark the world with them.
Bold and elaborate writing, not a cup of tea for all readers
Readers who don’t like flower language and lyrical writing may not like this book. As a reader, I enjoy flower-like writing, which was sometimes too decorated to my liking (Coco Chanel didn’t approve …).
But if you like historical novels, deep character sketches, and beautiful reimaginations of history, this book will be a solid favorite.
A memorable quote from “Chanel Sisters”
- The nuns said we should be happy with our station in our lives, which pleased God. But we could never be satisfied with what we had. We came from a long dreamer merchant who travels on winding roads.
- But these old Aubazine winds, as we know, found us again, moved, relocated, and wiped out life.
- There were no customers. It may never happen again. But we didn’t sew for them.We sewed for my mother [our sister], For ourselves. We sewed what we once wanted. We should have been in Mass and prayed. Needles and threads were our church and sewed our confession, the sacrament, our salvation.
- Like everyone else, Paris was taking off her dress and jewelry. She was cleaning up her dance shoes.
