Children feared casualties in recent attacks on refugee camps and internally displaced persons camps in northern Ethiopia

“UNICEF is outraged by the recent airstrikes at a camp for internally displaced persons and refugees in Tigray, northern Ethiopia.

“The attacks on January 5 and 7 reportedly killed many civilians, including children, and injured more.

“Refugee camps and IDP settlements are private objects, including schools that accept refugee children and families and essential facilities to provide them with humanitarian services. Respect them and protect them from attacks. Failure to do so may violate international humanitarian law.

“For more than a year after the outbreak of the conflict in Tigray, brutal acts of violence, including serious violence against children, have continued to be carried out throughout northern Ethiopia by all parties to the conflict.

“UNICEF has renewed its call for an immediate end to hostilities. We build on all parties to the conflict the first signs of progress in the past few weeks, international human rights, humanitarian and refugees. We call for compliance with the law, promotion of humanitarian access, and protection of children from harm. “
