Covid-19: SA defeats 58,000 dead and imposes stricter blockage restrictions

The death toll of Covid-19 exceeded 58,000 in South Africa on Tuesday night.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), an additional 208 deaths were recorded, increasing the number of deaths to 58087.

NICD added that 8 436 Covid-19 infections have been recorded in the last 24 hours with a positive rate of 17.8%.

Most of the new cases are from Houten, followed by Western Cape, Northwest, Free State and KwaZulu Natal.

The National Coronavirus Command (NCCC) met on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Covid-19 in the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa put the country under a level 3 blockade.

The new regulations include restrictions on alcohol sales, a curfew at 22:00, and limited meetings.

“The surge in new infectious diseases means that restrictions on the movement of people and meetings need to be tightened again. More strict compliance is needed, and more for those who do not comply with regulations. We need to take strong action, “Ramaphosa said Tuesday night.

He also said the country has the capacity to vaccinate at least 150,000 people a day and plans to increase it to 250,000 people a day.
