DA Steenhuisen calls for easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the tourism sector – SABC News

John Steenhuisen, leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), calls for easing of restrictions on COVID-19 for the tourism sector and international travelers

The South African Tourism Business Council is also calling on the government to lift the requirement for a PCR test for fully vaccinated travelers intending to enter the country.

The Council of the National Coronavir Command is expected to meet this week to review the current COVID-19 short-circuit regulations.

Steenhuisen said the sector needs to be revived.

“Especially in the field of tourism, it was one of the only growing job-creating sectors in Africa before the outbreak of COVID-19. The requirements for PCR tests are a huge deterrent and an additional cost for international tourists who want to get to a place like SA. What we can’t do now is put obstacles in front of international tourists to come to SA. We need them, we need the money and we need to revitalize this sector. ”

Steenhuisen said he believes some of the country’s closure restrictions due to the COVID-19 epidemic should no longer be enforced. According to Steenhuisen, mask restrictions can be eased for some age groups, such as students in schools.

“I don’t think we have to wear a mask all the time. I believe that the mask should only be worn in high-risk areas, such as hospitals or places where it is possible to spread the virus to vulnerable people. Much of the world has already stopped wearing masks and has proven to be less effective than it would be – for example, school children have very little effectiveness in fighting the virus, ”says Steenhuisen.

SA may be ready to ease restrictions: Prof Karrim

Salim Abdool Karim, former head of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on COVID-19, said South Africa could be ready to further ease epidemiological restrictions as infection rates decline.

Two years have passed since the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in South Africa.

However, Karim warned that given the nature of the epidemic and its past trends, we may not have gotten out of the forest yet.

He says there has been a slight increase in the number of infections in the country since the omicron version went down, due to the BA2 version when schools reopened this year, so caution is still needed.

“So this is another version of omicron, but it doesn’t cause epidemics. We need to be careful about the right timing, we don’t want to get into a situation where we act and lead to a new epidemic.

So I think we can lift most of the restrictions. I would say that we probably need to keep at least three of our restrictions in place. We have to keep certain restrictions on big indoor rallies. ”
