Disney to suspend political contributions to Florida over laws restricting LGBTQ debate – SABC News

Walt Disney Co. (DIS.N) is pausing all political contributions in Florida after a staff outcry over a law that would restrict discussion of LGBTQ issues in schools, CEO Bob Chapek said in a memorandum to staff on Friday.

Disney has been criticized for not taking a public stand against the operation, which opponents of the law say will harm lesbians, gays, transgender people and the gay community. The company employs more than 65,000 people at the extensive Walt Disney World Residence in Orlando.

“Talking to you, reading your message and meeting you have helped me better understand how painful our silence was,” Chapek wrote. “It’s clear that this is not just about a bill in Florida, but another challenge to fundamental human rights. You needed me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equality, and I let you go. Sorry.”

Chapek therefore vowed to increase support for advocacy groups to combat similar legislation in other states. It is also reconsidering its political gift.
