Djokovic or Nadal? It’s like a coin toss for McEnroe – SABC News

Tennis star John McEnroe thinks choosing a winner between Novak Djokovic and 13-time French Open champion Rafa Nadal is like a coin toss, giving Serbia a first-place finish in the world rankings in the quarter-finals expected on Tuesday.

Spain’s Nadal had won the French Open four years in a row before losing to Djokovic in the semi-finals last year – just the third time he has been beaten at a major clay-court tournament since his debut in 2005.

This was also the last tournament of the 58 career between the pair and Djokovic has looked in top form at the tournament this year, after not losing a set in his four rounds.

“Before the tournament when I chose, who do you choose? “I have a slight advantage over Novak,” McEnroe told Reuters on Monday.

“Rafa has done this 13 times, I was not sure about his health. He was injured, seems to be fine. But it could obviously go either way and Rafa has always been much better here.

“A small advantage over Novak, but if Rafa would win I would not be surprised at all.

Djokovic, who was forced to miss the Australian Open due to his unvaccinated position against COVID-19 and his expulsion from Melbourne following the media frenzy, is desperate to win in Paris and draw with Nadal’s 21 big attack.

They came to Paris with the opposite structure of the clay court.

While Djokovic looked to be in top form with his win in Rome, Nadal struggled with chronic foot problems and lost in the quarter-finals of Madrid before advancing to the third round in Rome.

Night meeting

Nadal has complained about the night meeting in Paris clay due to the cold weather, but that has not stopped the organizers from organizing the clashes under the lights of Court Philippe Chatrier.

Asked if that would give Djokovic an advantage, McEnroe, a Eurosport tennis expert, said: “I think so.

“But I thought so two years ago (2020) when they played in October. I thought it was better for Novak because it was cold and the ball was not going to jump as high but then Rafa hit it easily.

“So I mean, does it matter that Novak won (fourth round) in two hours and Rafa played four and a half hours? You would keep it. But Rafa shows that he is almost like Superman sometimes. Especially here.

“I do not have a coin, but it’s like flipping a coin to see who wins it.

The winner between Djokovic and Nadal will face either 19-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who has fascinated everyone with his 14-game winning streak, or German third-place Alexander Zverev.

McEnroe, who won seven majors and reached the final at Roland Garros in 1984, said Alcaraz was “incredible”.

“I mean, everyone loves him. I love him and he just moves like fresh energy, “said the 63-year-old in the interview. “He fights and he’s just so young, like bouncing (energy). He has a big game.

“He may be moving better than almost anyone I’ve seen. He could move better than Nadal and Djokovic now. He may be moving better than anyone else on the tour right now. It’s absolutely amazing. It will help you win a few games. “
