Durban police officer to appear in court after allegedly shooting son by mistake – SABC News

A Durban police officer who allegedly shot and killed his 12-year-old son after he convicted him of a burglary has been arrested and will appear in Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Greyville over the weekend.

According to the Independent Police Investigating Directives (IPID), the case is sensitive and investigations are ongoing. Ipid National Makeup Person Lizzy Super says the officer was asleep on Sunday morning when he allegedly cried out to his son for help.

She says she is investigating the case where a police officer fatally wounded the minor with a service pistol.

“It is said that Sunday morning at Manor Gardens a man heard his son calling for help while he was sleeping. When he woke up he saw an unknown man at the window, he picked up his service pistol and shot through the window.” she lays out.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said Greyville Police Station officers were called to the scene and the child was taken to a nearby hospital.

“He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A case of murder was opened by the Mayville police station,” Naicker added.

Ipid says a post-mortem is being carried out and the officer is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge.
