The Transport Ministry denied reports that the Cabinet had made a final decision on electronic tolls.

This after the media suggested that Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced in a meeting with presidents and CEOs of transport entities that electronic tolls would be removed.

According to the ministry, at the time, the minister said the decision would only be made in the first months of 2022 and that any further reporting on the matter was “misleading and inaccurate”.

“The issue of electronic tolls is the focus of Cabinet attention and will soon be finalized. The final decision is on how best to shoulder the financial burden of the Gauteng Expressway improvement project, while keeping the roads in pristine condition. We have agreed with the Minister of Finance that the announcement of the final decision will be made during the budget speech in February 2022, ”Mbalula said.

According to the ministry, the question of electronic tolls presents many impacts and challenges and is not “simply a question of breakage and not of breakage”.

“This impact includes a negative effect on SANRAL’s (South African National Roads Agency) balance sheet and its ability to maintain the toll-free road portfolio. As a result of strong engagements with the Gauteng Provincial Government, the National Treasury and the review of contributions from all stakeholders, another exercise has been mandated by Cabinet, ”the department said in a statement. –
