At least 43 prisoners died on Monday in Ecuador’s latest strike prison riotsaid the public prosecutor.
Authorities said fighting between the Los Lobos and R7 rival gangs began inside the Bellavista prison in Santo Domingo de los Colorados, in central Ecuador, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Quito.
“There are currently 43 prisoners dead,” the public prosecutor’s office said on Twitter, adding that the situation was “developing.”
The country’s South American prison authority, SNAI, said it had “security protocols” in place to contain the “order disturbances”.
Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo initially told reporters that two prisoners had been killed before increasing that figure to 41 in a press conference. The public prosecutor’s office then tweeted the latest death toll.
Carrillo also claimed that the authorities were in charge.
During the riot, at least 112 people tried to escape but were detained by security forces inside the prison grounds, Carrillo said.
Prisoners’ truck and ambulance with facial injuries were taken to medical facilities and family members of those jailed gathered in search of information, AFP reporters said at the scene.
Authorities have said they will search for weapons and transfer gang leaders to another prison.
Previously, about 350 prisoners have been killed in five separate prison riots since February 2021.
Exactly last month, at least 20 prisoners died inside El Turi prison in Cuenca, southern Ecuador.
The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, argues that the problem inside the facilities is the same as the problem outside, where drug gangs are trying to control trafficking routes.
Those contestants among the prisoners explode into violence at times, with some prisoners hacked to death or beheaded with machetes.
Even with greater investment in the prison system, bloody violence has not diminished with the creation of a commission to reassure facilities and new policies such as keeping the most dangerous prisoners in a single pension.
There has also been an increase in street crime and drug trafficking in Ecuador which the government has tried to tackle by declaring a state of emergency in the three worst – hit provinces: Guayas, Manabi and Esmeraldas.
The country seized a record 210 tonnes of drugs in 2021, with a further 82 tonnes seized this year.
