Emalahleni protesters call on the municipality to terminate the debt collection agency contract – SABC News

Members of the Emalahleni Civic Organization have blocked roads in the mining town, demanding that the municipality terminate its contract with the collector.

The association claims that the municipality has its own debt collectors and should not have outsourced the service to a private party.

Emalahleni Civic Organization spokesperson Matthew Mhlabane says the private company is threatening to hang up their properties.

“The police have decided to issue a letter [and] SMS to members. They threatened members of the community with legal action and attachment of their property, through the magistrate of the court. When issuing such SMS returns, they force community members to pay into a separate account. It means that the municipality is not getting the money and they [are] forcing even the elderly … the pensioners to pay sums above R1000 per month,” Mhlabane explains.

In July, the police in Mpumalanga arrested eight suspects during protests.

The protesters were complaining about the price hikes in petrol and diesel.
