At the celebrations on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, Barbara Creecy, the Minister for the Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, launched the Thohoyandou Botanical Garden in Thohoyandou, Limpopo.

More than 40 million has been invested in the development of the 86-acre botanical garden, and the investment in the garden has created more than 200 jobs, according to Creecy.

He says the development of the Thohoyandou Botanical Garden is expected to create more than 8,000 job opportunities through its natural resource management portfolio. He adds that creating the garden will create 200 temporary jobs.

The garden will become a tourist destination that contributes to economic development and serves as a venue for research and job creation. The garden also hosts workshops for traditional leaders and healers to raise awareness about the sustainable harvest of herbs.

Creecy adds, “This wonderful partnership puts the relationship between people and nature at the forefront, preserving our rich biodiversity for present and future generations. That’s what we mean when we ask people for a new deal. “

Thabo Mokone, MEC of Limpopo’s Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, is pleased to note that the Thohoyandou National Botanical Garden has been declared a national asset. He says he hopes more gardens will be declared a national botanical garden in the province.

Some members of the community hope the project will create more jobs.

Founded in 1986 by the former Ministry of Defense, Thohoyandou National Botanical Garden is home to native herbarium plant species. It is known for its tourist activities such as bird watching, hiking and educational environmental tours.
