Bheki Hadebe, a member of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Finances (Scopa) and MP for the African National Congress (ANC), has called Eskom board member Busisiwe Mavuso’s recent comments incomprehensible.
A heated exchange broke out during Scopa’s supervisory visit to Eskom on Friday last week.
Mavuso left the meeting after saying that ANC was responsible for Eskom’s challengesafter an argument with Scopa Chair Mkhuleko Hlengwa.
Hadebe says the current Eskom leadership knows the country has high expectations of them.
“We hired professionals based on their individual qualifications and expected them to change the situation at Eskom. When we appointed these professionals, we didn’t expect them to only focus on the past. We wanted them to reverse the situation,” Hadebe adds.
Below is the interview with ANC MP Bheki Hadebe:
The Shadow Minister for Civil Service and Administration of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Dr. Leon Schreiber, however, says what Mavuso said is the truth.
“I and the prosecution certainly applaud Ms. Mavuso for having the courage. We really hope that we will get more officials, more board members, to come forward in Parliament and tell the honest truth. Instead of criticizing people for telling the honest truth, even when it’s uncomfortable, we should be really lucky to have such a board member,” says Schreiber.

Mapaila criticizes Mavuso
South African Communist Party (SACP) First Deputy Secretary Solly Mapaila has criticized Mavuso for her comments.
Mapaila says the comments are shocking.
“This announcement was shocking to us and totally unacceptable. In fact, it has shown that when deployed for their job skills, some people just don’t know what to do. Your job, and the job of this current board, is to turn Eskom around to deal with the state takeover [and] to address corruption issues,” he adds.
