Eskom’s current management team is efficient, capable: President Ramaphosa – SABC News

President Cyril Ramaphosa says Eskom’s current management team is effective and capable.

In a special address to the nation on Monday evening, the president said the Eskom board is working hard to turn the utility around and reverse years of decay and mismanagement.

There have been growing calls for the government to fire Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter for failing to keep the lights on.

However, Ramaphosa attributed the current electricity challenges to the poor performance of Eskom’s legacy power fleet: “The performance of some of Eskom’s power plants has been further worsened by widespread theft, fraud and vandalism. After years of state capture and mismanagement, a competent and efficient management team is working hard to turn the utility around and reverse years of decline.”

Ramaphosa added: “However, as it stands, we are still facing a power shortfall of up to 6,000 MW. In recent weeks, a combination of factors has resulted in the loss of 18,000 MW of generation capacity, forcing Eskom to implement phase 6 load shedding.
