It is estimated that at least five people have died after the collapse of an obsolete diamond mine in Namaqualand, Northern Cape.
Officials in the area reportedly collapsed the mine early Wednesday morning.
The miners were believed to be illegal miners or Zamazama, but were trapped for hours hoping to find the survivors disappear soon.
Formerly the De Beers mining town, Kleinsee has attracted the attention of thousands of illegal miners over the last few years.
It is unclear what led to the collapse of the mine and how many people are still trapped inside.
Paul Swartbooi witnessed this event. “This morning, between 9am and 10am, the mine collapsed and some of the miners were trapped inside. If there were survivors, we wouldn’t. We’re in a safe environment. I’ve repeatedly begged the government to provide the right equipment to work, but all of these requests were deaf. We’re just trying to provide it to our families. “
