eThekwini Regional Conference Expected to Begin This Weekend – SABC News

The long-awaited African National Congress’ eThekwini Regional Conference begins this weekend with the registration of delegates on Friday.

The region has been without elected leadership for four years after its 2018 term expired.

The leadership race for the presidency is expected to be between former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede, who stepped down due to corruption chargesand the Speaker in the City, Thabani Nyawose.

Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede appeared shortly before the Durban High Court last week:

ANC provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli says they expect a successful conference.

“We are quite comfortable with the PEC in terms of preparation. There are comrades nominated. I think there are two distinct lineups in terms of the top five, one led by comrade Zandile Gumede and the other below. led by comrade Thabani Nyawose.

Ntuli adds: “We are very pleased that all groups seem very keen to ensure that the conference takes place, that no one seems to have a sense of discomfort or opposition to the processes leading up to the conference.”
