apple will change the connection to iPhones sold in Europe by 2024 when EU countries and lawmakers approved on Tuesday the same charger port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the first world.
Political intervention, which the European Commission said would make life easier for consumers and save their money, came when the industry failed to deliver a common solution.
Brussels has been advocating for a single mobile phone charging port for more than a decade, with complaints from iPhone and Android users about changing chargers for their devices.
IPhones are received via USB, while devices from Android use a USB-C connection.
Half of the chargers sold in mobile phones in 2018 have a micro-B USB connection, while 29% have a USB-C connection and a 21% power connection, according to a 2019 Commission survey.
“By autumn 2024, USB Type-C will be the common port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU,” the European Parliament said in a statement.
EU Commissioner Thierry Breton said the deal would save about 250 million euros ($ 267 million) for customers.
“It will also allow new technologies like wireless chargers to emerge and grow without causing innovation to be a source of market division and unsatisfactory customer service,” he said.
Apple, which warned that the plan would hurt innovation and create a mound of electronic waste, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Lawmaker Alex Agius Saliba, who led the debate in parliament, said: “We are proud to include computers, e-readers, earbuds, keyboards, computers, and sailing equipment.
The laptop will follow the rules within 40 months of being launched. The EU President will in the future be able to support wireless charger systems.
The fact that the agreement also covers e-readers, earbuds and other technologies will affect Samsung, Huawei and other device manufacturers.
