FEATURE – TECHNICAL IMPACT: Online learning platform for math teachers launched – SABC News

SABC News’ Tshepiso Moche reports on related technical developments in South Africa and around the world. In this issue he looks at the first online learning platform for primary school math teachers.

The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) has launched an online learning platform for mathematics teachers in primary schools.

According to SAMF, the online course is attended by 399 primary school teachers.

The math problem-solving courses for primary school teachers started earlier this month

Retired mathematics lecturer at Stellenbosch University, Alwyn Olivier, and SAMF primary school teacher development program academic coordinator, Dr. Erna Lamps, both developed the course content.

This is a free online tutorial.

Olivier says the goal of the course is to improve teachers’ problem-solving skills and the way they do math.

“The SAMC questions target conceptual knowledge, the application of knowledge to new situations, problem solving, reasoning, communication and general mathematical reasoning,” explains Olivier.

The course also aims to equip primary school teachers with skills that make this possible Help learners approach math differently.

“After thorough training, we are confident in their ability to support primary school teachers to develop their own problem-solving skills and attitude.”

Applications for the second year of primary school mathematics teachers begin in May. The second course runs from July 18th to the end of August.

Below are the levels of the course:

Elementary school (grades 4 – 7)
Learning about problem solving (strategies, specialization and generalization, induction and deduction). The medium through which the course is presented is problem solving, ie teachers learn to solve problems through problem solving. The ultimate goal is for teachers to enroll and prepare their students for the South African Mathematics Challenge.

GET Tier 1
Introduction to problem solving strategies; Offer for all teachers doing the course for the first time.

GET Tier 2
Offered to all teachers who have passed GET Level 1 or FET Level 1. The course covers the second round questions of the South African Mathematical Olympiad Juniors and includes a range of problem-solving strategies.

GET Tier 3
Offered to all teachers who have passed GET Level 1, GET Level 2 or FET Level 1.

FET level 1
Offered to all teachers who have passed GET Level 1. The course takes the questions from the first round of the South African Mathematical Olympiad Seniors and includes a range of problem-solving strategies.

Meanwhile, teachers who successfully complete the course will receive their certificates.

SAMF says all levels are supported by the South African Council of Educators and can be used for continued professional development.
