Fire damage at Katleho High School in Vrede estimated at R150 million – SABC News

The non-profit state education department said the fire damage to the Intutuho Katleho secondary school in Vrede is estimated at R150 million.

The fire started in the administration section and spread throughout the school. The students were transferred to other schools in the area to continue teaching and learning.

Education MEC Tate Makgoe made an inspection visit to the school to assess the extent of the damage.

Makgoe said the school will be fully operational within a month.

“Of course, there is overcrowding in some schools. We have realized that we have now gained permission in the school which is the part that does not turn off the lights, where we can bring in the next two weeks classes eight and nine (students) and create more space because there are other schools. which has a mobile classroom, so we have identified a space for a mobile classroom.”

Meanwhile, the principal of the school, Richard Sekhoetsane, said he was grateful for the quick response from the Department of Education.

“I am happy this morning the teachers are in the classroom, yes of course there are other challenges such as overcrowding, but we are talking to them. We talked to the principal of the other school so that we can to overcome the problem of overcrowding.”

The vice president of the school governing body, Thabiso Mofokeng, said they must ensure that educational activities continue despite the challenges of overcrowding.

Mofokeng said the nearby school was helpful.

As parents, we are ready to see our children progress in their studies. That is why we have decided to take our children to other schools while ours is being burnt.”
