Johannesburg-Ford Ranger customers already have a choice when it comes to model derivatives. And now there’s yet another sporty edition to consider, available in the form of a 2.0 single turbo FX4 model.

The price is R6 18900 for 4×2 and R687 900 for 4×4, with a new FX4 model slot between the XLT and Wildtrak models, which serves as a cheap alternative to the latter trim grade starting with the R700100. As a record, FX4 derivatives demand R30000 premium over the equivalent XLT.

To that end you get a number of sporty exterior and interior features. The FX4 stands out on the outside with black 18-inch alloy wheels, a black mesh grille with matching mirrors and door handles, the FX4 logo, a tubular sports bar with extended legs, and a drop with a 12-volt power socket. It is an in-bed liner. Buyers can choose from five colors: race red, sea gray, frozen white, agate black, and moondust silver.

On the inside, the model has FX4 embroidery on the seat. It has red contrast stitching, similar to the steering wheel, gear levers and leather-trimmed dashboard. Standard features include a 20.3 cm Sync3 infotainment system with dual zone climate control, cruise control, pushbutton start, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

The FX4 model is also the forerunner of South Africa’s FordPass Connect and FordPass apps. This is the connectivity service that is currently standard on all XL, XLS, XLT, Wildtrak, and Raptor models. The app allows owners to remotely control various vehicle functions such as door locking and unlocking, engine starting, etc. to activate the air conditioning system. Drivers can also search for available parking, find the nearest Ford dealer, and schedule services.

Like the XLT model on which it is based, the FX4 is powered by a single turbo version of Ford’s 2-liter turbo diesel engine that produces 132kW and 420Nm. Paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Driving assistance gadgets include traction control, adaptive road control, and trailer sway control.

The vehicle is backed up by a 4-year / 120,000km warranty and a 6-year / 90,000km service plan.
