JOHANNESBURG – Former Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Mpho Moerane left us.
This was confirmed by her family’s spokesman, Mike Maile, on Thursday afternoon.
“He unfortunately did not respond positively to treatment and with heavy hearts and deep sadness we confirm that we lost our beloved Mpho this afternoon. His passing has saddened us deeply; allow me to add that he was certified dead at 5:54 p.m.
His family and the African National Congress (ANC) previously said he was in serious but stable condition. He was meinvolved in the accident last Monday evening when traveling from Alexandra to his home in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg. Details surrounding the cause of the crash are still unclear at this stage.
An avid golfer and businessman, Moerane was born in the famous township of Alexandra. He started as an electrician with Eskom until around 2006 and worked his way into business and eventually politics.
While he had a brief stint as mayor of Johannesburg between October 1, 2021 and November 22, 2021, he previously served the city as a member of the mayor’s council. Moerane was in the running to become president of ANC Johannesburg.
Moerane had the ambition to secure alternative energy sources and for City Power to produce its own alternative energy.
At the same time, he served as an ANC leader in the region after being elected treasurer in 2018.
Moerane has served on several boards over the years, including Metro Bus, Alexandra Clinic and as a non-executive director of Chancellor House Holdings.
Moerane leaves behind his wife, Fikile, and four children.
Details regarding his memorial service and funeral will be announced in due course.
