Former Zambian president Rupiah Banda buried dead – SABC News

Rupiah Banda, the former president of Zambia, who ruled from 2008 to 2011 and died at the age of 85 last week after a battle with cancer, was buried in Embassy Park in the capital, Lusaka, on Friday.

Soldiers greeted Banda 21 with a gun, while others carried his coffin from the Anglican Cathedral in Lusaka to the tomb, while the air force planes flew past.

Banda held several senior diplomatic positions under President Kenneth Kaunda after independence.

In 2013, the Zambian parliament stripped Banda of his immunity from prosecution, paving the way for his arrest for corruption-related offenses. He was later acquitted in court for embezzling $ 11 million.
