Four people accused of killing two ANC leaders in Limpopo suspended – SABC News

The bail application of the four accused, who are accused of shooting dead two leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) from the Mogalakwena municipality, has been postponed until Thursday by the Mokopane sheriff in Limpopo.

Defendant is charged with alleged 2019 fatal shooting by ANC adviser Vaaltyn Kekana and ANC Youth League sub-secretary Ralph Kanyane.

The two were shot dead while inside a vehicle in Mokopane two years ago on suspicion of political assassination.

Two groups of Mokopane residents sang outside the district court where the four accused were applying for bail.

The defendants, Jabu Mashamaite, Mswazi Chuma, Samuel Mokonyana and Nkholo Mangadi, are facing two charges of murder and one of conspiracy to commit murder, which is believed to be for political reasons.

Roads adjacent to the court were fenced off. In one part of the fence, a group sang calling for the release of the accused war songs.

They held up placards calling for the accused to be released. On the other side of the fence, a group of residents also sang and demanded that the accused be denied bail. They also had signatures with hundreds of signatures that were later handed over to the courts.

However, two of the accused, Samuel Mokonyana and Nkholo Mangadi, told the court that they would no longer proceed with their bail application. According to the investigating police officer, the two are believed to be the gunmen who fired lethal shots.

Lawyers representing the defendants, Jabu Mashamaite and Mswazi Chuma, read out the affidavits in court and demanded their release on bail. In the statements, the couple denied any knowledge of the crime. They both told the court they would deny the crime.

The government then summoned detective Muhamad Salim Wahab to the scene to challenge bail. Wahab testified that they had video recordings and mapping recordings from mobile phones that came to the accused’s scene, where a witness says that the conspiracy to kill the couple was carried out as well as at the scene of the crime.

Samuel Manala, SAPS chief, said they had a narrow case against the accused.

“As for us, we are ready, the charges are ready, the investigation is complete. “The case is ready for trial before the Supreme Court, it can not be ruled out, it is quite clear that the suspects were not alone, there are still other suspects who are still ruled out.”

Lawyers representing the accused are expected to continue questioning the investigating officer when the case resumes on Thursday.
